(Posted: 28 June 2001)
Recent work by Dr Peter Burnham, of the University of Warwick's Department of Politics and International Studies, has shown that a 1952 plan considered by Churchill and his cabinet to resolve the UK's balance of payments problems came close to producing a de facto single currency area based on several currencies from former British colonies and European countries (including the French Franc) being pegged to Sterling.

From Mona Lisa To Tony Blair - Historian Pinpoints the Moment The Open Mouth Smile Was Born
(Posted: 17 July 2000)
Smiles have not always been the same. The modern open mouthed smile exposing the teeth is a particular favourite of politicians such as Prime Minister Tony Blair.. yet before the late 18th century people displaying open mouthed smiles were considered rude or demented - hence the closed mouth smile of the Mona Lisa. Now an historian at the University of Warwick has pinpointed when the modern smile was born and why.

(Posted: 23 May 2000)
The 26th and 27th May 1940 Dunkirk evacuation of British and French troops is now seen with hindsight as an example of Britain's determination to resist Nazi Germany at all costs. However University of Warwick Historian Dr David Carlton points out that at the time things seemed so dark for Britain that Churchill himself considered making a deal with Nazi Germany to end the war.

(Posted: 14 December 1999)
University of Warwick research student James Andrews is compiling a guide to over 200 pubs and inns in the Bay of Naples, Italy. However the pubs he details are almost 2000 years old, most of them were buried under Volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius, and some of the ancient "establishments" he lists suggest the facilities in many cases left a lot to be desired.

(Posted: 19 July 1999)
Whilst researching the availability of "Luxury" in the 18th century and in particular the eating and drinking patterns of the poor, Jonathan White, a postgraduate researcher in the History Department at the University of Warwick, has found that the 18th century authorities and media treated Gin drinking in much the same way as we treat heroin consumption today.

We are all familiar with the mountains of commemorative literature and merchandise that seem to mark Royal events today from weddings to funerals, but this is by no means a new idea. From as early as the 14th century lavish Festival Books have been produced to feed the constant appetite for marking royal celebrations and royal deaths. Now a University of Warwick Professor and his research team have been charged with producing a 1000 page selection of these festival books.
